Propecia™ and Proscar™
Propecia™ and Proscar™ were developed by Merck and Co Inc. In 1992, finasteride (5 mg) was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
One of the side effects is erectile dysfunction
That means it was intended to treat men with enlarged prostates. Data showed that men taking this drug for their enlarged prostates began growing hair. This was a side effect.
Later this drug was prescribed as a treatment for male pattern hair loss. Men who took this drug had the hope of getting their hair back. There were some side effects, but patients were assured that the side effects would only be temporary. Better yet, the side effects would resolve once the drug was discontinued. However, many men were finding out that this was not necessarily the case.
One of the side effects was erectile dysfunction and for many it doesn’t seem to be temporary. In fact, the condition can be described as permanent. These men who were dealing with hair loss now had a more serious problem. Sadly, for many, medication hasn’t corrected this problem.
